Assignment:

Scenario: The year is 1640. Josiah is a 17-year-old boy living in England. He used to be the oldest of 5 children, but that changed yesterday when his baby sister died. His family did everything they could to save her. His parents traded what little food they had for medicine and firewood to bring some heat into the house. But neither the warmth of the fire nor the medicine did any good. Recently, Josiah has been considering going to the New World to be an indentured servant. If he did that, it would be one less mouth for his family to feed, and he heard that once indentured servants finished their period of labor, they received freedom dues. He could finally make something of himself! This could be his chance!

Directions for Answer the Question:

  • Using information from the lecture,
  • Briefly describe indentured servants in the 17th century.
  • Tell me what an indentured servant was
  • Tell me what gender and age most indentured servants were.
  • Tell me about how long they had to work until they received their freedom
  • Tell me what sort of payment/rewards they were supposed to get from their masters at the end of the period of their service

Clearly state your position- Josiah should go be an indentured servant in the New World or Josiah should not go and stay in England (you must choose 1 position; neither is not an option).

Explain why you believe Josiah should or should not be an indentured servant in the colonies. If you believe that he should be an indentured servant, consider which colony he should go to.

  • Offer at least 2 specific example from the lecture to support your explanation.
  • DO NOT explain your answer by simply referring to the scenario listed above (although you may refer to it). The specific examples you provide to support your answer to the question must come from the lecture.
