Assignment:

All eyes are on the Senate following the death of 87-year-old Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg only 46 days before the 2020 presidential election. President Trump and leading Republicans have stated that they plan to have a new justice fill the seat before the election in November 3. Many democrats and liberal interest groups have argued that the process to fill the seat on the Court should not take place until after the election pointing to Senate Republicans refusal to hold hearings for Merrick Garland in 2016 because it was an election year.

  • Describe an action an interest group could take to prevent a new Justice from being selected before the election.
  • Describe how constitutional checks and balances applies to the appointment of a new Justice.
  • Explain why the selection of a new justice is such a contentious issue.
