Environmental Change and Humanitarian
Assessment: Written Assignment (2500 words)
Description and Instructions
Compile a portfolio of three case studies where environmental change is increasing disaster risk, with a growing likelihood or severity of emergency or disaster. These changes can be in the natural or built environment, or in human settlement patterns, changing transport routes, or other infrastructure. In each example, provide substantiating scientific evidence for your observation, and an explanation for the change.
From these, select one case study where there is evidence that environmental change has contributed to a realised disaster or emergency that resulted in humanitarian action.
In this example, and using evidence:
a. Explain the causal chain that linked changing environmental conditions to the resulting emergency or disaster.
b. Describe and examine the humanitarian response, with specific reference to the application of the humanitarian principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence.
c. Conclude by relating one relevant global framework, policy or strategy to your case studies to critique its application in real-world settings. This includes its implementation challenges in practice and opportunities for strengthening disaster risk management for development, including sustainable development.
The portfolio should include an introduction and a conclusion and should be no longer than 2,500 words (+/- 10%).
