Part I
There are various schools of emotional intelligence. Ability Emotional Intelligence is "the ability to reason validly with emotions and emotion-related information and use emotions to enhance thought" (Mayer, Caruso, & Salovey, 2016, p. 296). The emphasis here is on emotional intelligence as a capability, competence to do something, that involves emotions in the service of reasoning. It has four branches or problem-solving areas: perceiving emotions (in others and self), facilitating thought using emotions, understanding emotions, and managing emotions. Each of those branches includes certain types of reasoning.
Read the Mayer et al (2016) article. Consider how you reason using ability emotional intelligence when you are facilitating or a member of a group. Reflect on your experiences in this project group. Reply by answering these questions:
• When did you demonstrate the ability to use emotional intelligence? How did you do that? What branch and type of reasoning was demonstrated.
• When you consider all four branches and types of reasoning, what ability, which if developed further, would enhance your skills as a facilitator?
