ASSIGNMENT:
The Embry & Biglan (2008) article you read this week presents the idea of using evidence-based "kernels," or irreducible small units, that can be used in practice. In this discussion, you're asked to consider the pros and cons of using kernels in social work practice. You also read Graaf & Ratliff (2018), who describe a process of evidence-informed social work that incorporates both care planning and evidence-based interventions. One of the approaches they discuss are evidence-based kernels.
Respond to the following prompts:
- In Embry and Biglan's kernel taxonomy, what is one kernel that stood out to you that you could see yourself using in practice?
- Does all the kernels discussed by Embry & Biglan meet SW values? Why or why not?
- One challenge that Graaf & Ratliff identify is the fast-paced and sometimes uncertain world of community-based social work. What is one possible way you could meet this challenge?
