A coffee can (with diameter of 6.0 inches, a height of 6.5 inches and a massof 256 g) has a 1 cm diameter hole drilled in the bottom of the can and another drilled in the side. The can is capped, inverted, and completely filled with methane. Since methane is lighter than air, it will escape from the hole located at the top. The moment when methane starts to escape from the hole, the gas is ignited. As methane burns at the top, air enters the can through the hole on the side, changing the composition of the gas inside. The gas mixture in the can finally explodes, sending the can bouncing off of the lab bench.
Assumptions:
The can is completely filled with pure methane and none escapes from the side hole.
The pressure in the room is 1.00 atm
Room temp is 23 degrees C
Air is 78% N2, 21% O2, 1% argon and all other gasses are negligible
Assume all gasses behave as an ideal gas
If all the energy released in the final explosion was completely transferred into the kinetic energy of the can, what is the maximum height that the can could be propelled up above its initial height?
