(a) Draw the ?-only molecular orbital diagram for ML6 using AOM. Now, show what happens to the orbitals of the MO diagram after the Jahn-Teller tetragonal distortion is added for a d4 high spin complex. (Hint: The Jahn-Teller effect removes degeneracies in the MO diagram. Which MOs are affected?)

(b) Next consider a ?-donor ligand complex such as MX6n+ (x=halide) and its AOM diagram. Again the MO's are affected by a tetragonal distortion, changing both the molecular orbitals identified in the ?-only diagram as well as the molecular orbitals with ? symmetry. Sketch an example of one of these ? interactions which demonstrates why ? symmetry orbitals are also affected by the distortion.
