Module Learning Outcomes assessed in this piece of coursework.

1. Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of nutritional supplements, including critical evaluation of the theoretical mechanism of action, the evidence supporting an ergogenic effect, and possible side effects.

2. Explain and interpret the effects of environmental factors on sport and exercise performance and critically evaluate strategies to overcome these environmental limitations

3. Demonstrate key skills of communication (produce written reports and/or oral presentations; incorporate tables, charts and diagrams in documents/presentations; collate information), numeracy (collect and analyse data), ICT (to present coursework; to obtain information), teamwork (working with others), and develop independent learning skills.Assignment Brief with assessment criteria.

You are required to analyse the group data collected from the laboratory sessions and prepare an individually written report that must not exceed 2500 words in the style of a journal article:

NB: You will be informed of which laboratory (A or B) that you will need to write up in week 11 beginning 5th December 2016. The laboratory report write up is entirely independent based on the group data obtained in class.

It is recommended that you refer to several published examples of original research articles to assist you with your report.

Formatting Guidance for the Proposal

The laboratory report should be double line spaced, text justified and font size 12 Arial and clearly sectioned as follows (with approximate word count):

Title

The title of the study

Introduction
This section will give some background to the topic and the context for the investigation (rationale). Provide justification for the proposed study based on the previous literature (e.g. a lack of consensus in previous work or that no study has yet examined the context that you will be investigating etc.). The introduction should close with a clear statement of the aim and a testable hypothesis identified (that clearly links to the rationale).

Methods
For this section you should provide a description of the participants used for the experiment (number, training status, anthropometric data etc.), experimental design and procedures (including make, model and place of manufacture of all equipment used). Also identify the statistical analyses performed.

Results
This section will be small, containing only the results in the form of tables and/or figures displaying the results (Mean ± S.D.) and the report of the statistical analysis. Describe your results to clarify your findings but do not offer interpretation (why they occurred).

Discussion
This section should begin with the main finding(s) of your experiment based on your statistical results. This section will carry the bulk of the marks of your assignment and requires you to interpret your results and compare/contrast them to other literature in respect to you rationale. Why might your findings be different? (Primary reference material must be used to support your statements). What were the limitations of your study?

Conclusions

A clear and concise statement that concludes the main finding of your research, provides brief recommendations and ideas for future work.

References

The reference section should contain all the journals referenced in the text and correctly referenced according to SES Harvard style (see StudySpace for a guide).Purpose of the Sessions

To demonstrate the effect of hypoxia on excess post-exercise oxygen consumption.

Learning Outcomes
- Explain and interpret the effects of environmental factors on sport and exercise performance and critically evaluate strategies to overcome these environmental limitations.
- Demonstrate key skills of communication (produce written reports and/or oral presentations; incorporate tables, charts and diagrams in documents/presentations; collate information), numeracy (collect and analyse data), ICT (to present coursework; to obtain information), teamwork (working with others), and develop independent learning skills.

Overview

You will investigate the effects of hypoxic exposure during submaximal exercise (30 min cycling at 110 W) on excess post-exercise oxygen consumption. In one session the exercise will be completed in normoxia (20.9% oxygen, sea level) and on the other it will be completed in hypoxia (17.5% oxygen, simulated altitude of 3000m). The experiment will be conducted in a randomised, cross-over design. There will be 7 other lab groups who will perform exactly the same experiment as your group allowing the combined results to be collated and the group data analysed.

You MUST take detailed notes of the experimental methodology during the sessions (including make/model of equipment etc.) to enable you to complete your methods section.

Procedures

Pre Test: In preparation to participate in the experimental trials, all participants should:

- Not consume alcohol the night before either exercise test
- Remain fasted (overnight) before the test
- Not perform strenuous exercise in the 24hr before the test
- Not consume caffeine on the morning of the test (e.g. tea, coffee chocolate)
- Evacuate their bladder if necessary
- Complete the informed consent form and PAR-Q at the back of this handout

Pre-exercise: On arriving at the laboratory, you should ask your participant to go to the bathroom and evacuate their bladder if necessary. Following this, your participant should be directed to the private changing room where they can record their body mass before changing into exercise clothing and attaching the heart rate (HR) belt (ensure the belt is wet before fitting). Once changed, the participant will be seated for a 30 min rest period. Expired gas samples will be collected using the Douglas bag system at minutes 6-10, 16-20 and 26-30 for the measurement of oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production. Heart rate (HR) will also be measured during these time periods. The participant should then be directed to the environmental chamber and sit on the cycle ergometer. The pulse oximeter (for the measurement of % saturation of oxygen, %SaO2) will be attached to the ring finger of the non-dominant hand.

During exercise:
After the resting measurements have been recorded, the participant will cycle at an intensity of 110 W for a 30 minute period. Once up to speed, a stopwatch should be started so that exercise duration can be monitored and physiological variables collected at the correct time. HR, Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) and %SaO2 should be recorded at 5 minute intervals throughout the exercise period. Once the final measurements have been recorded, the exercise should be stopped.

Post-exercise
Immediately after exercise, the participant will exit the chamber be seated for a 30-minute period with HR and expired gas samples collected (minutes 0-1, 2-3, 4-5, 9-10, 19-20 and 29-30).
