Assignment:

In the past two decades, numerous authoritarian regimes have fallen to what Samuel Huntington calls the "third wave" of democratization. Some of the new democratic regimes have proven surprisingly durable, while others have failed to take hold in any significant way, which has caused scholars to reconsider some basic questions of regime change.

What are the chief obstacles to the democratization of authoritarian systems? Possible factors to consider include the following, but you may look at others: the type of authoritarian rule, the role of the state in the economy, the position of the military in politics, the external (i.e., international) environment, and the level of social inequality. Your answer should be based on a comparison of at least one successful case of
democratization with at least one case of continued authoritarian rule.

NOTE: You should show that the "key to success" in the successful case was not present in the non-democratized case and/or show that the main obstacle to democratization the non-democratized case was either absent or overcome in the successful case.
