Assignment:

Some of the new democratic regimes have proven surprisingly durable, while others have failed to take hold in any significant way, which has caused scholars to reconsider some basic questions of regime change.

Possible factors to consider include the following, but you may look at others: the type of authoritarian rule, the role of the state in the economy, the position of the military in politics, the external (i.e., international) environment, and the level of social inequality. Your answer should be based on a comparison of at least one successful case ofdemocratization with at least one case of continued authoritarian rule.
