Assignment:

William Cavanaugh, a theologian at DePaul university in Chicago, discusses the profound change in society that comprises a part of the definition of the concept 'modernity'. Modernity means more than 'now' or 'today's world'. Rather it implies a change from a world where printing technology introduced a move towards mass literacy and a move towards technical proficiency - the so-called machine age. A new form of political organization also emerged superseding the pre-modern world of personal loyalties.

In the Podcast, William Cavanaugh notes that as this new form of political organization called the nation state came into being, the State took control over religion within national boundaries. Wars that are classified as wars of religion were actually wars of state formation and struggle for power, where the State used religion as an excuse.

In the modern world, based on this history, is there a place for religion apart from being either ignored or used by the State?
