Chapter 4 - Acquired Needs Theory: Achievement, Affiliation, and Power
David McClelland, a well-known psychologist, began studying the relationship between needs and behavior in the late 1940s. He proposed the acquired needs theory, which states that three needs-for achievement affiliation and power-are the key drivers of employee behavior. McClellan used the term "acquired needs" because he believes we are not born with our needs; rather we learn our acquire them as we go about living our lives.
