Question: A Gallup poll taken on a random sample of Canadian adults in February 2000 asked the question, "Do you favour or oppose marriages between people of the same sex?" A similar poll was taken in April 1999 (Edwards and Mazzuca, 2000). The Minitab output for the "two proportions" procedure (with the "pooled estimate for the test") is as follows, where Sample 1 is the February 2000 poll and Sample 2 is the April 1999 poll. X is the number who answered "favour":

a. Define appropriate notation and write the null and alternative hypotheses to test whether the proportion of adult Canadians who favor marriages between people of the same sex was different in April 1999 and February 2000.

b. Using the Minitab output, go through the remaining four steps of hypothesis testing to test the hypotheses that you defined in part (a).

c. Use the confidence interval given in the Minitab output to test the hypotheses in part (a).
