Assignment: You are a member of McDonald's strategy team, and your task is to benchmark McDonald's. You should identify approximately 3-4 key areas for which it is important that McDonald's establishes some benchmarks. You should explain why each area is important for McDonald's benchmarking. Each area can have multiple sub-categories and benchmarks.
You should investigate what McDonald's competitors do well (competitive benchmarking), what the industry standard might be, and perhaps other industries whose results might be relevant to McDonald's (process benchmarking or even generic benchmarking). You should find some specific data and information using the Internet and/or your own personal investigation. You should provide citations for any data or information that you obtain from public sources or describe how you obtained the information if you performed your own investigation. Some of the benchmarks can be quantitative, but some of the benchmarks can be more qualitative.
Since you do not have the resources that would be available to McDonald's, you can also include recommendations for benchmarking in one or more of the key areas. You should explain why this benchmarking would be useful for McDonald's. It should also be realistic that a company like McDonald's would be able to obtain that information. You should explain how McDonald's could obtain that information.
Your deliverable is a Powerpoint presentation designed to brief McDonald's Senior Vice President for Strategy, Kristy Cunningham. You should target the presentation to last approximately 15 minutes. Some of you will be randomly selected to present in person or via Zoom. You will be contacted if you are randomly chosen to present approximately a week before the due date. If you are not selected to present, you should add written comments on the Notes page to provide more information on what you would have said if you did make a presentation to Ms. Cunningham. The notes do not need to be a word-by-word script but can provide more details than what is provided by the slides. You should not record yourself presenting.
Your presentation should look professional. Do not copy and paste tables of data from the Internet, but recreate the data within the Powerpoint slide. It will look much better and enable you to focus on retaining the most important data. Your slides should have a consistent font, capitalization, and the types of bullet points that you use. Having slide numbers on your presentation is also a good idea. Make sure to cite your sources. You can either do this with slides at the end of your presentation that list the references or by including a citation on a slide where you reference data from that citation. You should not make recommendations for how McDonald's can improve. The presentation should only focus on benchmarking McDonald's current status.
You will be graded on: (1) your identification of key areas for McDonald's to benchmark; (2) your ability to find benchmarks within these areas and your ability to identify how a company like McDonald's could benchmark; and (3) the clarity and professionalism of your presentation.
