For the solvolysis reaction of 1.00 mL of 2-chloro-2-methylpropane (0.012 mol) with 100.0 mL of water, one of the products is HCl. The basic strategy of this lab was to add a surplus of 0.185 M NaOH from your buret to the reaction mixture and to record the length of time it took for the reaction to produce enough HCl to neutralize all of the added NaOH.

1. Write the balanced equation for the solvolysis of 2-chloro-2-methylpropane in water.

2. If it took 106 s for the color to change after 2.00 mL of NaOH were added to the flask, calculate the concentration of 2-chloro-2-methylpropane present in solution at t = 106 s.

3. If the second data point occurred after a total addition of 4.00 mL of NaOH at t = 219 s, calculate the intial rate of reaction in units of M/s.

4. Given the data above, calculate the rate constant (use correct units).

5. Is the solvolysis reaction an SN1 or SN2 reaction?
