The text defines a status as "a socially defined position in a group or society characterized by certain expectations, rights, and duties" (p. 96). Importantly, the statuses exist are independent of the various people who hold them (p. 96). Each of us has various statuses with some that change over time. A few examples of a changed status include: being a college student currently and upon graduation, no longer holding a college-student status or being an employee currently and upon retirement, no longer holding the employee status. So who are you?
