Summary Origin of the settlement house movement A settlement house was both a residence and a community center that aimed to help immigrants and the poor adjust to industrial urban life. The American settlement house movement, led primarily by women, gave rise to many programs and reforms with long-lasting effects. The main goal of the American settlement house movement was to provide housing and social services to immigrants and migrants in industrial cities.

However, African Americans who migrated to urban areas from poor southern regions did not receive as much attention as European newcomers. Lasch-Quinn (1993) defines a black settlement house as any organization that "performed extensive work in black neighborhoods in the settlement tradition".
