You Tote Them, a convenience store over there where the jingle is, “We Sell’em and You Tote’em,” has customers arrival at a rate of 0.4 customers per minute, and with a service rate of 0.5 customers per minute. With a single-server, use the Poisson arrivals and exponential service times model to answer the following questions. 1. The probability that no customers are in the system 2. The average number of customers waiting 3. The average number of customers in the system 4. The average time a customer spends waiting 5. The average time a customer spends in the system 6. The probability that arriving customers will have to wait for service The owners of the store have heard that customers who have to wait in line translates into $75 per week in lost sales for each minute the average customer waits in line. Because of this the owners are considering adding a “bagger” to the single-server line to help with the service rate. Through their experiments they believe the service rate would improve to 40/60 per minute. 7. What happens to the average time a customer waits in this “bagger” system? How much is “saved” in dollars by reducing lost sales in this bagger system? If the bagger is to be paid $150 per week is it worth it to go to the bagger system?
