The 8-cylinder, 6.7 liter Ford diesel engine used in the F250 truck will produce 800 ft · lbs of torque at 1600 rpm. It also uses a turbocharger which is capable of 40 psi of boost. Boost is the additional amount of air forced into the cylinder by the turbocharger over the 1 atm the engine sucks in naturally: therefore, the cylinder has 15 psi + 40 psi = 55 psi of air in the cylinder at maximum boost pressure.

Diesel fuel is a complex mixture of compounds, but let the average chemical reaction for combustion of diesel fuel in the cylinder be approximated as follows: C12H26 is called dodecane.

C12H26 (l) + 37 O2 (g) -→ 12 CO2 (g) + 13 H2O (l) 2

????6.7L???? o,

From the amount of air in a single cylinder 8 calculate the heat released, ?Hrxn, from the combustion reaction above for the two cases below, for a single cylinder.

1. No boost: cylinder pressure = 15 psi

2. Maximum boost: cylinder pressure = 55 psi

Hints:

  • Let the amount of O2 in air be 21%.
  • Let O2 be the limiting reagent in the reaction; this will determine how much fuel you can burn.
  • Use the ideal gas equation, and let T=300 K to determine the amount of air and O2 in the cylinder.

Please show work, can't figure this out to save my life.
