Leading and Managing in Early Childhood Settings

Assessment Type - Personal Learning Plan

Assessment Overview

Leadership in early childhood education is a complex and relational process that extends beyond formal management responsibilities. Early childhood teachers are expected to demonstrate leadership through advocacy, ethical decision-making, professional collaboration, reflective practice and commitment to improving outcomes for children, families and communities.

Currently early childhood is in the process of renewing perspectives, models and language of leadership based on principles of connection, dialogue and non-hierarchical leadership styles. As an emerging early childhood teacher and leader, your philosophy serves as a "living document" that guides your daily pedagogical decision making, relationship building, and professional conduct.

For this assessment, you are required to write a 2,000-word personal philosophy statement that outlines your core pedagogical beliefs about teaching and learning and explicitly connect these to classical or contemporary theorists and mandatory national regulatory and professional frameworks.

Assessment Task

You are required to critically reflect on your emerging leadership identity within the early childhood profession by developing a dynamic personal philosophical statement.

The statement must include four core areas including:

The image of the child and childhood

The role of the teacher and pedagogy

Partnerships with families and communities

Ethical and inclusive practice.

Core Requirements

How do you view the child's agency, capabilities, and right to be an active participant in their own learning?

Requirement: Link these beliefs to specific developmental, sociocultural, or critical theories (e.g., Piaget, Vygotsky, Dewey or Bronfenbrenner). You may also consider relevant development concepts when considering children's learning and growth.

The Role of the Educator and Pedagogy

Define your image of the teacher and the purpose of early childhood education.

Discuss your views on play-based learning and your role as an intentional teacher. Outline how you cater for multi-disciplinary learning and how you set the learning environments to meet the needs of all children.

Requirement: Make direct, cited links to approved learning frameworks (e.g., the Early Years Learning Framework V2.0) or a contemporary educational philosophy such as Reggio Emilia.

Partnerships with Families and Community

Explain your philosophy regarding families as children's first and most influential teachers.

Discuss how you build reciprocal, culturally responsive relationships and inclusive practices. Effective cross-cultural communication can support respectful relationships with diverse families and communities.

Requirement: Connect your approach to Quality Area 6 of the National Quality Standard and relevant sections of ECA Code of Ethics.

Ethical and Inclusive Practice

Outline your commitment to equity, inclusion, diversity, and reconciliation.

Discuss how you will manage ethical dilemmas and advocate for the wellbeing and rights of every child. Consider the role of advocacy as part of professional practice.
