Engaging with Families and Community
Assessment Objective
Students to critically reflect on theoretical perspectives on family engagement practices and apply these in an authentic early childhood setting.
Assessment - Situational Analysis
Instructions to Students - Step 1: Choose a Centre & Gather Information about this centre
Select a Real Centre: Choose an Early Childhood Centre you are familiar with (e.g., where you did placement, where you work, or where a family member attends). Use a pseudonym (e.g., "Blossom Valley ELC," "Little Explorers Preschool") to maintain confidentiality.
Brainstorm the Details: brainstorm everything you know about this centre. Use the following prompts:
Location: Suburban street? Near shops?
Physical Environment: Modern building or older? Big outdoor space? What's the vibe?
Structure: Is it long-day care or sessional kindergarten? How many rooms? What are the age groups?
Family and Community Socio-Cultural Orientations: What are the common cultural backgrounds? What languages do you hear at pick-up time? Are most parents busy professionals, shift workers, or stay-at-home parents? What are their main concerns (play, safety, academic readiness)?
Step 2: Critical reflection on Engagement Practice
Potential Engagement Practices and Cultural Responsiveness (such as Multilingual Resources, Inclusive Learning Environments etc.)
Ethical Considerations (Confidentiality, Informed Consent and Power Imbalance etc.)
Effective Communication Strategies: A Blended Digital & Personal Approach, Active Listening and Clarity and Accessibility, including Cross Cultural Communication and Developing Effective Communication
Step 3: Reflect on personal biases and assumptions and the ways these might impact on ways of engaging with families
