Learning outcomes - On completion of this unit a learner should:
- Be able to interpret and use engineering sketches/circuit/network diagrams to communicate technical information
- Be able to use verbal and written communication skills in engineering settings.
- Be able to obtain and use engineering information.
- Be able to use information and communication technology (ICT) to present information in engineering settings.
Questions -
Q1. Identify at least 4 pieces of technical information that relate to features of the circuit. Answer any 1 of the following 2 circuit diagrams.
(1) BS3939 Circuit Diagram (2) PP7307 IT network diagram


Q2. Produce an electronic circuit diagram comprising of at least 5 components, using the correct BS standards, symbols and conventions.
Draw a neat and clean diagram with the use of a ruler. Include the following table at the bottom of your diagram.

Q3. Give a 10 - minute (5 slides at least) Presentation on any 1 of the following topics-
(1) Computer Security
(2) Car Maintenance
(3) Airplane maintenance
You need to demonstrate speaking, listening and body language skills, subject knowledge, and independent research to pass these criteria.
Q4. The computers at your workplace are being maintained by a designated authority. Conduct an interview/discussion with the authority about how the computers are being maintained regularly. Prepare a set of questions before the interview. Keep taking notes during the discussion.
Create a formal report depending on the answers received. You can include graphics, images etc in the report. Be sure to mention the day, date, time and the name of the designated authority in your report.
Q5. Carry out a maintenance procedure on a desktop computer. You need to make your own schedule and maintenance sign-off document to prove that the task has been carried out correctly. Include images, tables etc and try to make your maintenance procedure look professional.
Q6. In the maintenance procedure above, list all the things you have assessed for the maintenance. Explain why a specific procedure has been rejected or changed.
Q7. Evaluate a written communication method. Identify ways in which it could be improved. Justify your choice. State reasons for not using other alternatives.
Q8. Create a portfolio of evidence which proves that while studying this unit you:
(1) Have used a computer system to present information in written, numerical and graphical forms;
(2) Have prepared and made a presentation using a computer;
(3) Have communicated using e-systems;
(4) Have correctly handled IT hardware and software for use in an engineering situation;
(5) Have used a software package to word-process a document.
Q9. Select any one of the software packages that you have used during any of your presentations. Write a 250-word report of its effectiveness as a tool.
Q10. Write a 500-word document related to your project (presentation), which evaluates your use of an ICT presentation method. Can you think of an alternative approach to this?
