Corrosion is a leading cause of structural degradation of bridges and roadways. Not only does rust weaken metal structures, but as it builds up it forces apart connecting parts of the structure, causing the structure to fail and risking public safety. Yet, methods used to prevent corrosion may also have negative effects on human health.

Your task is to research ONE of the questions below related to the health and safety implications involving electrochemical process developed to combat corrosion.

Questions to consider:

  • What health and safety hazards are associated with waste generated by electroplating companies? What is being done to reduce the impact the waste is having on the environment and human health?
  • What are some of the toxic substances that can escape from electronic waste in the environment? What are the potential effects of these poisons on our health?

Write a opinion paper on one of the two questions.
