Conventional target markets worth the potential customers

At what point is the line drawn from hiring someone who has a talent for your specific field and the requirement of credentials pertinent to your field. For instance, I am currently looking to hire leasing agents and another property manager for some of the sites that I oversee. I have always been a believer in green applicants and being able to mold them, but the bare minimum is that they have to have some sales or managerial experience. According to Shen, it would be potentially a great investment to entertain an applicant with no previous property management experience however from experience, that could prove to be a huge liability and an even larger investment of time to teach them. So, the question goes, being that there could be potential for new hires outside the realm of property management, is the risk worth the trouble? In marketing, is the risk of venturing outside of the conventional target markets worth the potential customers?
