Control Options for Results
Read the case below carefully after you have reviewed the text chapter on Controlling.
I sat down in a meeting with one of my star employees, Irene, to discuss the quarterly results of her goals. Each member of my team set quarterly performance goals in the "Management By Objectives" system that was tied to bonuses. Irene was a process improvement specialist. She was responsible for training product teams in brainstorming and effective meeting techniques, as well as documenting procedures that all the new product teams had to follow.
Irene confessed that she had not met her quarterly goal of documenting a certain set of procedures. The company’s most important new product team, codenamed “Cappuccino”, was having schedule slippages and members were under a great deal of stress. The members were having trouble collaborating to solve problems and maintain progress. They had asked her to coach them out of their dysfunctional team dynamics.
Irene said “I did it because I knew it was the right thing to do for the company. Cappuccino is critical to the company’s future success. However, I have been really depressed knowing I didn't meet my goals this quarter."
