Conservatism dealt with the idea of legitimacy during this period of time. Old politically powerful families believed that this theory was to be used to make legitimate, and thus solidify, the monarchy's authority and the hierarchical social order that the French Revolution had destroyed. Members believe that the monarchy was able to guarantee political stability, instill that the nobility were rightful leaders, and that both were needed in public life in order for it to function properly. The French Revolution left an influence in the formulation of conservatism through the many influential writers of this time period. These writers included Edmund Burke, Joseph de Maistre, and Louis-Gabriel-Ambroise Bonald. Many of them believed in natural rights and blamed the Enlightenment's critique of the Catholic Church for the French Revolution.
