This problem involves calculating and interpreting the 95% confidence interval for a proportion. While you can use SPSS to determine proportions, you need to calculate the confidence interval by hand.

Every year the CDC conducts phone surveys to assess the health risks of people in the U.S. This survey is abbreviated BRFSS, which stands for Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Review the following data collected for 2009:

Total number of respondents 426,000

Number of respondents who smoke everyday 54,815

Number of respondents who smoke some days 21,581

Number of respondents who are former smokers 110,060

Number of respondents who have never smoked 143,619

a. Calculate the proportion of each group of respondents.

b. Calculate the confidence interval for the proportion of respondents who stated they are former smokers.
