Question: The problem I am addressing via the project is the prevalence of central-line acquired bloodstream infections in a medical-surgical unit. The short-term goal I aim to achieve is for the registered nurses on the unit to demonstrate a proper understanding of central-line care. The outcome of this short-term goal is to have the nurses understand the proper way to conduct central-line care and verify understanding.

In the long-term, the desired outcome is for the rate of central-line acquired bloodstream infections to decrease quarter over quarter. I plan to utilize a questionnaire for the nurses to complete to find what deficits might be with knowledge or in the company's policy. Get It Done Now!

In the long term, the data collected from unit leadership will evaluate the effectiveness of the education provided through the project. After conversations with unit and facility leadership, there is clearly an issue with the prevalence of central-line acquired bloodstream infections in this unit. External evidence shows that these infections are extremely dangerous, and prevention is paramount. One study shows the use of a dedicated central-line acquired bloodstream infection prevention nurse when a facility suffered a 200% increase in infections (Star et al., 2024).
