Purpose of Assignment

This assignment is designed to provide the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding and recognition of key elements of interpersonal communication as it is portrayed. Admittedly, a film is scripted and may not be a fully realistic portrayal of relationships, but the concepts of relationships are generally identifiable. In fact, the scripting of the dialogs and relationships often provides clearer examples than one might see in real life.

Assignment Requirements

Identify a feature length film that has a focus on relational development. Generally, a drama or 'dramedy' works best. If you Google "relationship movies," you will get several suggestions if you are struggling to find a film.

Watch the film, paying particular attention to concepts of interpersonal communication and relationships as discussed in the chapters in this learning unit.

Write a paper (1100 to 1250 words in length) that has three parts:

  • A short description of the plot and the key relationships that will serve as the basis for analysis;
  • Identification of the concepts with specific examples from the film (incorporate specific dialog to make the examples clear and vivid.
  • A brief discussion of how the relationship in the film deviates from an actual relationship one might have in the real world.
