LIBERTY, EQUALITY, FRATERNITY. Compare and contrast how Enlightenment writers of the eighteenth century understood concepts of freedom and/or equality, vs. Romantic writers of the nineteenth century. Who needed liberating, and from what? How did different people believe that liberty and/or equality could be achieved? Consider the historical events and intellectual shifts that helped to shape their ideas (e.g. the dawn of rationalism, the French Revolution, the Industrial Revolution, the turn toward nature). Your essay could also address how free and equal we are (or are not) in today's modern world. Your essay should discuss several primary texts in the course manual as you show the various ways in which writers and philosophers are reacting to the ideas, events, and conditions of their times.
