In 1885, Rev. Josiah Strong, pictured above published a best-selling book titled, Our Country: Its Possible Future and Its Present Crisis. Chapter 19 of your textbook offers a brief discussion of Strong and some of the ideas laid out in his book. In part, Strong made the argument that the Anglo-Saxon race was not only the "superior race," but also had a destiny to conquer and "civilize" the world. As noted in your textbook, Strong, like others, believed that the United States had a duty to expand American influence around the world. "Can anyone doubt," Strong asked, "that this race...is destined to dispossess many weaker races, assimilate others, and mold the remainder until...it has Anglo-Saxoned mankind?" (Shi, page 814)
Based on what you've read thus far (Chapters 15-19), how do you see the ideas of Strong and the concept of Manifest Destiny play out? In other words, discuss how the U.S. attempted to "dispossess, assimilate, and mold other (non-white) groups from 1865-1915. select a few examples from Chapters 15-19. Include a discussion of African Americans, Native Americans, or any area of the globe that witnessed American imperialism and intervention from 1865 to 1915. Use specific information and examples discussed in the textbook.
