Assignment:

One of the central goals of anthropology is to throw a mirror onto our own culture by examining societies that have very different mental maps of reality than we do. This often brings up the concept of cultural relativism, and the need to not judge by our own standards of "normality." How do the three examples provided in Guest (pages 217-220) about the scope of human sexuality: "Mati" work in Suriname, machismo in Nicaragua, and sexuality and pleasure in corporate Japan complicate American notions of identity? Are the women discussed in Suriname lesbians? Are the men who have sex with men in Nicaragua gay? And what is the motivation for the Japanese businessmen to go to hostess bars? Would this last example apply to American corporate (or college) culture?
