Assignment:

Suppose it is 1767, a Briton and a colonist meet at a tavern to discuss the "imperial crisis" that was then dividing the British-Atlantic empire. Using Benjamin Franklin's testimony to Parliament as your main source, describe each side's opinion as to the nature of the empire and why the colonists are (or are not) subject to Parliament's taxes. What is the colonist's response to the claim that they are already "virtually represented" in Parliament? What is the Briton's response to the colonial concept of a "federal empire" of self-governing parts subject only to the king? Is there any mutually agreeable solution to the dispute?
