According to Pearlson, Saunders et al. resource-based view (RBV) “concentrates on areas that add value to the firm” (2016). RBV focuses on resources that can manage in a rapidly changing environment while applying strategically used resources rather than competitive barriers (Pearlson, Saunders, et al., 2016). Southwest Airlines main challenge after the merger was integrating AirTran employees into the Southwest culture while continuing to carry out complex operations daily. To attain a successful merger Southwest and AirTran employees needed to make customers feel as though nothing was changing, rather, emphasizing on the benefits customers are receiving from the merger. One main attribute companies need to consider are table stakes that are necessary to maintain a competitive advantage. Employees table stakes included personnel structure, seniority, and pay systems, which needed to be redefined. These table stakes are important to employees and necessary for Southwest to continue operations. Over 7,700 pilots from both companies voted in favor of a new system which was a successful step in completing the merger.
Southwest maintains a competitive advantage due in large part to its company's culture and high employee satisfaction. Southwest’s fun-loving culture not only provides employees with opportunities to grow within the company but also provides customers with positive experiences while using their services. To attain this culture Southwest will need to work with AirTran employees while attaining proper communication and patience to adapt in the new company culture.
