Compute approximate values of E₁, E₂, G₁₂, ν₁₂ for the composite of exercise. Compare the results obtained using the mechanics of materials approach with the results obtained using more accurate formulas which are programmed in the accompanying software. Comment the results.

Exercise

Give an approximate value for the compressive strength of an Al-Boron composite with V_f= 0.4. Aluminum 2024 has E = 71GPa, Poisson = 0.334, G = 26.6 GP a, yield strength = 76 MP a, fatigue limit = 90 MP a, elongation = 22%.

Boron fibers have E = 400 GP a, ultimate strength = 3.4 GP a, Poisson = 0.25.

Note that Boron fibers tend to be perfectly straight and that aluminum has a linear shear stress-strain plot before it yields.
