Assessment: Long Laboratory Report Assignment task type:

AT3 is a full Laboratory report (including an abstract, introduction, materials and methods, Results and Discussion, Conclusion) in which you create a complete nutrition information panel and compare it with commercial estimates for the food assigned to you, based on your findings from Practicals 1 to 4.

Task details

In HSN104 you will be performing laboratory experiments during the trimester to develop a nutrition information panel (NIP) for a commercial food item. In this assignment you will learn to present your findings in a scientific manner. The scientific skills (data analysis and communication) from this task are very relevant to analyses performed in routine food testing laboratories.

Assignment Instructions

You will be provided with the AT3 Template outlining the required sections: Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion, Conclusion, and Appendix. During the laboratory sessions, you will complete the relevant practical calculations using a worksheet and record all experimental data. This data must be used to inform your report.

All sections of the report must be completed. Each section carries a different marking allocation, as detailed in the rubric, students are strongly encouraged to review these weightings before commencing the assessment. Where appropriate, peer-reviewed literature should be used to support interpretations and discussion.

Purpose:

Laboratory reports are a standard form of reporting scientific data. You will briefly compose a nutrition information panel (NIP) based on the data you collected in Practicals 1 to 4. You will analyse your findings and compare them with the commercial NIP information using evidence from peer-reviewed literature sources.

This assessment evaluates your ability to present experimental work in a scientific format, analyse and interpret data, integrate relevant literature, and communicate findings clearly and professionally.

ULOs

Undertaking this assessment task will develop, evidence and assess your development of the following ULOs:

ULO5: Compose a food nutrition table and write a laboratory report evaluating the laboratory data, comparing to commercial NIP values using evidence from credible scientific literature.
