Atlantic Healthcare

Atlantic Healthcare is an investor-owned hospital chain that owns and operates nine hospitals in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. As a recent graduate of a prominent health administration program, you have just been hired by Washington Medical Center, Atlantic’s largest hospital. Your first assignment at Atlantic is to complete a strategic analysis, including a rebuild of the values, mission and vision; a strength, weakness, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis; a competitive analysis, and the development of a scorecard to track progress, is performed before the proposal is presented to the investors. They are waiting on your analysis before they make decisions about the current CEO and CFO.

To glean more information about the company, you spoke with the Mark, the CEO for Atlantic Healthcare. He strongly suggested you examine Atlantic’s consolidated financial statements, which lists the company’s long-term debt obligations, including its first mortgage bonds, installment contracts, and term loans. Exhibit 14.1 contains information on three of the first mortgage bonds listed in Atlantic’s annual report. Mark was also very transparent about the lack of a cohesive strategic plan and his willingness to help you begin from scratch.

Unfortunately, Atlantic’s chief financial officer, Hugo Welsh, found out about your interest in the firm’s debt financing. “Because you are so interested in our strategic structure,” he said, “here are some thoughts that I’ve developed to help you with your portfolio and presentation”.

The mission and vision statements across the nine hospitals are not consistent because they are all in different markets, but need to be rebuilt based on values that transcend state lines and markets.

The economic objective of Atlantic Healthcare is to be the most successfully hospital in every market for all inpatient and outpatient services.

Our best chance to be successful long-term is to cut costs on our workforce and replace workers with less qualified personnel.

The accreditations and certifications required of all our hospitals are not standardized, but do the minimum per each state

You quickly recognize you have some differences of opinion between the CEO and the CFO and you would like to stay clear of these issues. To minimize conflict as you complete your strategic management portfolio, stick to what is best for the company and the investors. Keep in mind this may include personnel decisions when compiling action steps.

Remember this is a nine hospital system in the Northeast, and they are struggling with financial challenges that are driving the organization’s operating margin deep into the red. The hospital is facing pressure from competitors to both the east and the west, and struggling to retain referrals from its own on-staff physician base.
