Many diversity initiatives in the workplace call for tolerating differences in individuals. Leading consulting companies offer training programs on how to encourage or foster tolerance of differences among employees based on diversity of religion, race, culture, sex, sexual orientation, and other differences.
However, if we take a closer look at the words used to encourage cooperation and to understand how we differ, we end up comparing two terms in particular-accepting differences versus tolerating differences.
-Define and contrast the terms "acceptance" and "tolerance" in the context of workplace diversity and, specifically, in the goal of encouraging men and women to develop relationships of respect and understanding when working toward common organizational objectives. For example, one definition of tolerance is to endure something unpleasant or painful whereas a definition of acceptance is to welcome someone as "one of us."
