2. Classifying cultures as "high- and low-context" to analyze interactions can help to explain many misunderstandings between people. Personal space, expressions of anger, and subtlety of insults vary tremendously across cultures. In a workplace, criticizing the work of an employee may be done in front of other employees. Discuss the different levels of offense this practice might bring up if the employee is from a high-context culture vs a low-context culture. Discuss the difference types of context and power communication providing examples of each and popular individuals who often portray this type of communication. Discuss how the difference in context and power can influence discussions between cultures.
3. Public health nutrition often deals with cross-cultural nutrition education message construction. Certain public health groups such as the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) and (SNAP) have published extensively on developing and testing various nutrition education messages in different cultures. Discuss one of the described nutrition messages, what has been changed to meet the cultural needs and how the education might be viewed by the cultural group. Discuss how relationships, family power, respect, and overall communication impacts the nutrition education - both verbally and written.
