Question 1: Our final session of the first semester (in person!) focused on the changing role of data in business research. Compare and contrast traditional analytics sourced data with "big data" derived data. Use the case studies we discussed in class to clearly identify how business research/intelligence might evolve in the future.
Question 2: Indo-Canadian Foods is an established small GTA import export firm that specializes in importing culinary and food preparation products (spices, preservatives) from South Asia for the greater GTA market. The firm until recently has been successful by catering to a small base of local Indian restaurants and Indian grocery stores. Sales are now slow and declining quarterly. New online-based competitors are gaining greater market share every day. These competitors frequently discount their wholesale prices and can offer more selection. Margins are always tight for Indo-Canadian Foods. The company can't afford to discount as much as its competitors as it carries significant overhead. It has to maintain a large physical warehouse and management is reluctant to terminate long time and loyal employees. However, customers have been increasingly complaining about Indo- Canadian Foods' poor customer service; staff are impossible to reach on the phone and are frequently dismissive. To turn around the business, management approaches a financial institution for an infusion of capital. Before investing, the bank requires a due diligence report about the future profitability of this business. Sketch a potential research design/research plan for this study. Make sure you indicate your research problem, identify 2 research symptoms, outline five research objectives, and list/annotate five secondary sources.
