Purpose: Legislation and regulations are a part of the overall functions of Human Resources. It is essential to learn the differences between these regulations and how that can show up in your career. You will analyze and compare provincial or federal laws related to Employment Standards and Equity and Workplace Safety with a company you are interested in working for.

Instructions:

Step 1: Research a company within your field of interest in your area of residence. Look for a company that you are interested in working for. This company should offer positions that you will be qualified for once graduating from Robertson.

Step 2: Determine if this company is regulated by federal or provincial legislation. For federally regulated industries, click here. Any industry that is not on this list is provincially regulated.

Step 3: Review the appropriate resources to start researching either provincial or federal regulation (depending on your chosen industry). If you are researching provincially regulated industries, please select the province you live in or plan to work in.

Step 4: Choose one of the regulations, standards, or acts you have learned and researched. Research your chosen company and assess whether they appear to be adhering to your choice's regulation, standard, or act. Provide an overview and comparison of whether the company you chose is adhering to the regulation/standard or act that you have selected. Provide an overview of your findings and a rationale for whether you would like to work for this company or not.

*For example, you might want to research wages, news articles, best practices, lawsuits, or how well they're rated/spoken about by employees on hiring sites such as Indeed.
