Construction Information (Drawing, Detailing, Specification) Assignment -

In this assessment you will have opportunities to provide evidence against the following criteria. Indicate the page numbers where the evidence can be found.

Submission Format: The submission is comprised of two parts:

1. Construction Information; to include:

a. Site plan

b. Floor plan

c. Elevations

d. Section

e. Detail(s)

f. Door and window schedules

g. Outline bill of quantities

h. Schedule of works

All drawings should include a title block, showing project information, and be numbered using an industry standard.

2. All written questions should be answered in the form of essay writing and presentation format, it is required to follow the instructions from each task in below.

The essay should be written in a concise and formal business style. As such, your choice of font and font size should contribute to the clarity of the information. The essay should be well-structured, using tasks, using headings, sub-sections and paragraphs as appropriate. The recommended word is around 5,000 words and at least 3 pages of answers to each question.

Assignment Brief and Guidance:

Your employer, a medium-sized general contractor, has been commissioned to design and build a small house in Hong Kong Island. The design team within the company has prepared a set of outline design drawings, which provide general information about the proposed building, site and form.

You are tasked with the responsibility of preparing the construction information package that will allow the construction team to build the project. The package of information required includes the following:

  • Site plan
  • Floor plan
  • Elevations
  • Section/Details
  • Door and window schedules
  • Outline bill of quantities
  • Schedule of works

Accompanying the construction information package, your employer wishes to understand your reasons for the drawings, specification and schedules that you have produced.

1. List and discuss the type of construction drawings which should be included in the proposed project. You may also explain the purposes of these drawings.

2. Apart from the construction drawings, describe other different types of construction information and their uses.

Compare different types of construction information to identify their suitability in the construction process. (M1)

Justify the use of Bill of Quantities and Schedule of Works. (D1)

3. Develop a set of the following:

a) General arrangement drawings (including site plan, floor plans, sections and elevations).

b) Door or windows construction details drawings.

c) Door or windows schedules.

4. Produce an outline content of bill of quantities for the proposed project.

Compose a schedule of works for the proposed project. (M2).

Assignment Brief and Guidance:

One of your colleagues, in a medium-sized general contracting firm, has produced a set of construction information documents for a residential building in Kowloon. Before issuing this information to the construction team, your employer has asked that you review the information to ensure that it is fit-for-purpose. In particular, your employer asks you to:

  • coordinate the drawings with the schedules and specifications
  • identify any information clashes
  • highlight areas where there may be missing or incorrect information provided.

You are then tasked with making corrections to the construction information, ensuring that copies of the originals and your recommended changes are recorded.

Finally, you are asked to prepare a short report on the construction information package that you have reviewed. You will discuss your findings with the original author of this work, as part of both of your continuing professional development.

5. Produce and relate specifications to the door/window drawings and schedules in Attachment A.

6. Draft a memo to your employer to explain what circumstances may occur construction information "clashes" and what you recommend to avoid these happen.

Prepare a query sheet to the Architect to identify the errors, missing information and discrepancies of construction drawings and details in Attachment. (M3)

Propose corrections to construction drawings and specifications using industry standard forms of notation. (D3)

7. Describe the roles and responsibilities of the parties involved in production of different types of information in a construction project.

8. Describe how design and construction are sequenced in terms of producing construction information. Learner should examine the relationship between different bodies of information and how they work in conjunction.

Compare the roles of CAD and BIM in the collaborative production of construction information. (M3)
