In Sparrows Point, Baltimore there is a company called Machine Technologies & Systems (MTS). They have a very good reputation for producing high quality machined parts. They have a variety of advanced computer controlled equipment and a number of experienced and trained people who have the ability to design and build complex equipment to suit customer specifications.

Their traditional business has been in building hulls for small to medium sized ships. When the US shipbuilding industry took a downturn, they diversified into other similar projects such as tunnels for roadways under the sea, and large oil and chemical storage tanks. Shipping costs for these items can be high, and their location near the coast provides them business and protection from overseas competition.

The nature of the business makes it difficult to forecast demand for the future. Their reputation in the industry is very helpful. The marketing group is always on the lookout for possible new projects. A large project can be secure and keep them busy for a long time. It also means turning down a number of short profitable projects
