HR communication is all about participation. Companies that can successfully engage employees through two-way internal communication will see a happier and more productive workforce. Employees are viewed as internal customers, and participative communication will lead to more trust, higher engagement, positive word of mouth, higher morale, and even greater company loyalty. There is a wide range of communication vehicles that allow for two-way conversation, including meetings, events, audio/video conferencing, and, more recently, social media. It's not about more communication-it's about more effective communication. Technology has led to information overload. Many large companies monitoring intranet site usage have found that visits to company information pages and responses to emails are getting lower, and some employees have even used email spam filters to block out corporate communication! Higher travel costs and more teleworking are also making social media an attractive option for employers. Social networking sites for business such as Ning and LinkedIn are increasing their user bases rapidly. Social media can even reduce unnecessary email and instant messages among employees. Many companies are skeptical of social networks because of a perception of lost productivity or security breaches.
