Question
In what ways can we understand private property, trespassing, and/or vagrancy (homelessness) as concepts used to enforce/enable colonization? During colonization, private property played an important role. Many Indigenous peoples were forced out of their homes and had them taken away from them without their consent. This forceful power over Indigenous peoples was a main aspect of settler colonialism. As a result, many indigenous peoples were displaced, often with no place to go, while the settlers claimed the land as their own with property rights. Indigenous peoples were controlled by the colonial borders. As a result, the term trespassing was used as a way to keep them out. It was used as a way to restrict the access to traditional lands and resources within. Many Indigenous peoples were not allowed in their land where they used to hunt, gather, fish and provide for their families, while the settlers were using this area and extracting resources. Colonization often displaced Indigenous peoples, leading them to become without a home. This resulted in them being forced to migrate to other areas, further north sometimes. Displaced communities were sometimes criminalized under vagrancy laws, especially if they refused to relocate or failed to conform to European.
