Question

Detective Rodriguez wishes to test the hypothesis that repeat offenders tend to commit burglaries faster than first-time offenders. To test this hypothesis, she analyzes surveillance footage from residential burglaries that have occurred over the past year. Working with two trained analysts, they review security camera footage that captured the complete duration of burglary incidents where perpetrators were later apprehended and classified. The "burglars," as they are referred to in the case files, are classified as repeat offenders (those with prior burglary convictions), first-time offenders, and those with insufficient criminal history data. The analysts identify 10 repeat offenders and 30 first-time offenders with complete footage. The analysts record the amount of time it takes for individuals to complete their burglaries from entry to exit. The SPSS data file contains two variables: a grouping variable with two levels, repeat offender (=1) and first-time offender (=2), and time in minutes to complete the burglary.
