Question
I have had the pleasure of working with a bunch of different style leaders over my career. Some good and some bad. I can give 2 examples of good leaders that had different styles yet was able to get the same amount of production from their team.
In a previous company, I had a sales manager that could coach incoming salesman quickly and in such a simple way that it made sense to everyone the first time. He also had so much confidence in himself that it would spill over into the new hires making their transition into the position seamless. He was also skilled enough to go out into the field and show them how it's done exactly like he drew it up. All to often a leader will tell you what to do but its more of a do as I say and not what I do type of way. Not this guy. He would go out there and show you exactly what to do and then coach you to be the best version of yourself. However, his best attribute was his ability to delegate. After showing you what to do, he would allow you the space to go out and figure out your own way of accomplishing the same result. This lead to a strong belief in not only the system, but in their own sales ability.
Another leader that I am currently working with now is a boots on the ground type of leader. She truly exemplifies the lead by example style. Her office time is limited because she is always in the field working with her branches or salespeople solving problems and training to improve our current team. Her level of experience speaks volumes as well because with any issue that is presented, she has a solution for based off past situations. Her personality is radiant as well, able to inspire even the toughest employees.
These two leaders that I have had the pleasure of working with have taught me so much in my career. Where these two are similar is in their way to inspire, instill confidence and coach through experience. Where they may differ is their approach. My previous sales manager was very competitive and would coach through numbers. He wanted 100% of every sale. The other is driven to be the best but also knows when to turn a customer down and avoid dealing with certain people.
Whats a good response to my classmate discussion response?
