Question
As a counselor-in-training, it is important to consider clients' cultural backgrounds, as these factors can influence their experiences and ability to make changes. Capuzzi and Stauffer (2024) emphasize that advocacy is one way counselors can better understand and support clients from diverse backgrounds. After conducting research, I connected most with Shatterproof, whose slogan is "Stronger Than Addiction" (Shatterproof, 2026). The organization advocates for several important issues, including improving the quality of addiction treatment, increasing training for healthcare providers, preventing substance use before it begins, and holding accountable the companies that contributed to the opioid epidemic. There are several ways I can become involved with Shatterproof, including participating in events, making donations, volunteering, advocating for policy change, and organizing fundraisers. Becoming involved with this organization is important because it demonstrates support for clients, promotes social justice, and helps improve access to treatment and recovery resources (Shatterproof, 2026). According to the Grand Canyon University Counselor Dispositions (2022), amiability involves demonstrating kindness, humility, and compassion. Advocacy reflects these qualities by showing clients that counselors genuinely care about their well-being and are committed to addressing barriers that affect their lives. Shatterproof addresses institutional and social barriers by advocating for policy changes that expand access to evidence-based treatment, improve insurance coverage, reduce stigma, and integrate addiction care into mainstream healthcare (Shatterproof, 2026).
