You are to design a chlorination tank for killing microorganisms in the effluent from a wastewater treatment plant. It is necessary to remove 99% of active bacteria in a wastewater flow of 120 m3/hr.

Assume the inactivation rate constant (k) of 0.2 min-1.

a) Determine the tank volume if the contact tank is a CSTR reactor.

b) What is the retention time of the CSTR reactor.

c) It was proposed that, instead of using a CSTR tank, the activation can be achieved in the transport pipeline (diameter = 0.3 m) from the treatment plant to the river. Calculate the required length of the pipeline to achieve the same 99% remove.
