What is the best approach to teaching and learning?
- a teacher-centered approach, which is called Direct Instruction.
- a student-centered approach, which is Constructivism.
Both teaching methods have advantages and disadvantages that teachers should carefully consider when lesson planning. In selecting which teaching method is appropriate, teachers often consider the following variables: student ability level, prior knowledge level of student, class size, content, developmental age of student, assessment, goal of the lesson, and learning objectives.
Construct an argument explaining which approach to teaching yields the most learning.
1. Based on the teaching approach you selected, what are the most important characteristics of that approach that enhances learning?
2. Make sure to construct your answer as if you were trying to convince a peer to adopt your perspective on teaching.
3. After you have argued your point of view on the best teaching method, describe two hypothetical scenarios where the approach you selected for question #1 might yield little learning or fail in application.
In your answers, make sure you convey that you understand the foundational elements of both the Direct Instruction method of teaching and Constructivism.
