For combustion of hydrogen gas the standard enthalpy of reaction is -286 kJ/mol and the standard Gibbs free energy of reaction is -237 kJ/mol at 298 K and 1 bar. Calculate the maximum amount of electrical energy which may be generated by combustion of 1000 g of hydrogen gas a) in an electrochemical fuel cell operating at 298 K and 1 bar. b) in a power plant where fuel is burnt at 600 K to drive an electrical turbine, with the turbine cooled by river water at 300 K. (Ignore variation of combustion enthalpy with temperature).
